The early birds got the worm with the limited production and marketing of the NES Classic Edition. When Nintendo announced that the all-too-short shelf life of the console remake was officially over, many fans and analysts speculated that a SNES Classic, or something similar, might be on the way. Those sharp cookies were proved right some time ago when Nintendo did indeed reveal their SNES Classic edition, set to release this year. And now, we have not only a pinpoint release date of September 29, but a full list of games. There aren’t quite as many as the NES Classic, but pay close attention to this list. It contains a little surprise…

Super Mario World
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Yoshi’s Island
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Donkey Kong Country
Kirby Super Star
Kirby’s Dream Course
Star Fox
Star Fox 2
Super Punch-Out!!
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Earthbound
F-Zero
Mega Man X
Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Final Fantasy III
Super Castlevania IV
Secret of Mana
Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts

That’s 21 games total with a fantastic spread of genres and franchises. So did you spot the surprise game? If so, congrats! If not, here’s a hint: “unreleased.” Now go back and take another look. I’ll wait – just not for long. In fact, I’m about to blurt it out right now, so don’t scroll down if you want to figure it out yourself.

It’s Star Fox 2!

The SNES Classic comes with an HDMI cable and a price tag of $80. That’s less than $4 per game, not counting the console itself. So hold off on your virtual console purchases for a while, you’re going to be pretty busy this fall. And let’s face it, if Star Fox 2 isn’t the first game you dive into on the SNES Classic, I will personally do a barrel roll.
