Miley Cyrus has been forced to look into her past with Liam Hemsworth, and it is bringing up some feelings. The singer thought she had long closed the chapter on her ex-husband. Her romance with boyfriend Maxx Morando is thriving. However, with her hit revenge anthem, Flowers, facing copyright infringement issues, Cyrus is reminded that her wounds haven’t fully healed.
Close friends of the former Disney star are worried about how she is handling the Flowers lawsuit. “Miley — for the most — has put Liam behind her, but this business with the lawsuit has really set her off again and got her very anxious and freaked out because it’s all coming out that she wrote this song about him,” a source told InTouch Weekly. Cyrus never particularly confirmed nor denied Hemsworth was the inspiration for the track. However, she didn’t think it was “something she wanted to be forced to talk about.” Unfortunately, if the lawsuit persists, that might be the case.
“It’s looking like she may have to go on record in court and explain her motivations behind the song, which is just very, very painful. It’s reopened old wounds that she thought were healed.”
With Cyrus feeling vulnerable, sources say her next step is to contact Hemsworth. “She’s now saying she wants to speak with Liam to give him a heads up and get some closure on the whole painful chapter,” the informant claimed. Unfortunately, Morando doesn’t love the idea. “[It] isn’t going over well with Maxx,” says the insider.
Why Was Miley Cyrus Sued Over Flowers?
On September 16, Tempo Music Investments sued Cyrus, claiming Flowers bore “striking similarities” to Bruno Mars’ When I Was Your Man. Per People, the lawsuit alleges:
“It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man.”
Tempo Investments, which owns a share of the copyright in Mars’ hit, said Cyrus’ song “duplicates numerous melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements.” The company is seeking an unspecified amount in damages. They also want her to stop reproducing, distributing or publicly performing Flowers. Cyrus hasn’t commented on the lawsuit yet.
