Daenerys may have abolished slavery in Essos in the Game of Thrones universe, but there’s still that lingering question: “what if she was never successful?” The same can be asked about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. What if the South was successful in their secession from the Union, and slavery remained legal? The creators ofย Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss plan to answer that question in their next series,ย Confederate, coming to HBO at some point in the future.
The show will focus on answering that question of what if. The South has succeeded in their efforts to secede from the Union, and, so, slavery has become something of a norm in society. While this is the case, there are still those that don’t agree with the South’s methods, so the next Civil War looms just around the corner.
Considering the show is still in the beginning phases of development, there’s not much information onย Confederateย at the moment. It can be speculated that the show will take place in or around our current era, as to show how slavery has developed over the years since the first Civil War. The show won’t be easy to watch-much likeย The Man in the High Castle, where it’s depicted that the Nazis have won World War II-but that doesn’t meanย Confederateย won’t have its share of real world parallels that’ll be important to witness.
โWe have discussed Confederate for years, originally as a concept for a feature film,โ the two began. โBut our experience onย Thronesย has convinced us that no one provides a bigger, better storytelling canvas than HBO. There wonโt be dragons or White Walkers in this series, but we are creating a world, and we couldnโt imagine better partners in world-building than Nichelle (Tramble Spellman, who was a producer on CBS’ย The Good Wife) and Malcolm (Spellman, a writer/producer on Fox’sย Empire), who have impressed us for a long time with their wit, their imagination and their Scrabble-playing skills.โ
Production forย Confederateย will begin after the final season ofย Game of Thronesย concludes next year.
