The highly-anticipated sequel to the deep-sea survival game is officially making waves as it heads to Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2025. Announced during the October 2024 Xbox Partner Preview event, Subnautica 2 will debut as an early access title through Steam and Xbox Game Preview program. Game Pass subscribers can also play the game on day one when it drops next year.
One of the biggest features in this installment is cooperative multiplayer, the most requested addition from the community. Up to four players can team up and swim through the ocean depths together. Whether you’re schooling with friends or braving the deep alone, Subnautica 2 will have plenty to offer as it’s not just made for multiplayer. The co-op mode will be entirely optional and solo divers can still enjoy the game in single-player mode.
Subnautica 2 teased a brand new direction for the series. For the first time, players will be leaving the familiar waters of Planet 4546B behind to chart unknown seas. The developer Unknown Worlds promises that Subnautica 2 will be awash with surprises and that even the most experienced adventurers will find plenty to discover.
There have been some concerns regarding its monetization system after the Subnautica 2 team was bought by Krafton. Nevertheless, in a now-deleted August 2024 post, community manager Donya Abramo clarified that the game will not follow a live service model. Subnautica 2 will use the same update structure as its predecessors and not come with season passes, battle passes, or subscriptions.
As the release date approaches, the team will be sharing even more about the new tools, vehicles, and sea creatures you’ll encounter. Subnautica 2 is already available to be added to your wishlist on the Xbox Store and Steam. There is also an official Discord server where you can discuss current and future content with the developers and fellow players.
