Marathon is ‘Still Alive’ and ‘Coming Together’ Assures Bungie Dev After Lack of Updates

The finish line is still far away

This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

Back in 2023, Bungie, the studio behind Destiny 2 dropped a trailer for one of the most stylish and visually distinct shooters yet, called Marathon. It’s supposedly an extraction PvP shooter. The trailer on YouTube has since accumulated 21 million views, most likely thanks to the game’s striking aesthetics, but since then, nothing. No big dev update whatsoever… until now that is. A Marathon dev has recently released a video assuring potential fans that the game is coming along.

After rumors and speculations that Marathon has died, Joe Ziegler, Marathon Game Director has released quite a lengthy dev update video. Here it is:

In it, Ziegler summarized the state of the game and showed a couple of screenshots of the Thief and Stealth class or character. Additionally, his calculation points to a likelihood of a closed beta sometime in 2025.

More than anything, however, it’s a reminder to everyone still interested that Marathon is “still alive” and under development.

“Some things are a little bit more complete, like our environments are starting to come together in a really, really beautiful way. Some of the character models we’ve been iterating through. So they’re coming together but they’re not fully there yet… So it’s a little early to show you all of it as one piece,” Ziegler stated.

It’s not the dev update you’ve been waiting for, sadly. There are no gameplay videos or big reveals that reinforce the promise of Marathon.

Previous reports and leaks point to Marathon getting downscaled after a focus group test and due to constant changes in leadership and creative direction in Bungie. In fact, Joe Ziegler only entered the scene as the game director in May 2024, replacing Christopher Barret. Joe Ziegler has notably worked on similar shooters like Valorant.
