Drew Barrymore is under fire after her recent interview with Martha Stewart. The actress turned talk show host has been making headlines for her very touchy and up-close interviews. On the show, Drew is usually seen sitting on a couch next to her guests. She often holds their hands, touches them, and gets very close to them during in-depth conversations. However, Martha wasn’t feeling it and went as far as to push Barrymore away during their recent encounter, which led to some awkward vibes.
According to The Daily Mail, Drew Barrymore welcomed Martha Stewart to her show this week. During their talk, Barrymore got serious and while biting her finger, asked Stewart what made her “soft and gooey.” Stewart didn’t hesitate to reveal that being treated in a soft and gooey way was the way to make her feel loved. Barrymore then began rubbing Stewart’s arm and asked her if she liked being treated like a lady.
Drew then tried to get even closer to Martha, but the TV personality immediately put a stop to it. “You’re the wrong gender,” she said. “I know, I know,” Barrymore responded with a laugh before falling back on the sofa. Thankfully, the two women cut the tension when one of Barrymore’s dogs came up on the sofa with them.
Drew Barrymore Bashed For Touchy Martha Stewart Interview
Of course, fans had plenty to say about Drew and Martha’s exchange.
“Martha is so not about this stuff. I think it’s a bit cringey to ignore boundaries in these times but I don’t blame Drew after the way she was brought up,” one person stated.
“Drew needs to be talked to, off camera. Some of her instincts are wrong, and she needs to check herself. Good that Martha was bold enough to signal “Stop It!” Made her guest needlessly uncomfortable,” said another.
“Drew’s dominant love language is obviously physical touch. I’m sure she means no harm, but she needs to recognize that being touched in any way makes some people extremely uncomfortable when you invade their personal space,” a third person wrote.
“If I were a celebrity, I would decline every invitation to go on Drew’s show. She has absolutely no sense of personal space and needs to realize that not everyone likes to be touched,” a fourth comment read.
Drew’s Been Under Fire Before
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that the talk show host has taken heat for the treatment of her guests. Last year, Oprah Winfrey visited Drew Barrymore’s talk show. During the episode, Drew was seen sitting very close to Oprah and caressing her arm while they talked. She also cozied up close to actor Austin Butler when he visited the show to promote his projects.
Over the summer, Barrymore admitted that she likes to sit close to her guests because being a people person motivates her. She also admitted that she tries to practice physical distance, but that it’s not one of her strong points.
It’s clear that Drew Barrymore has a love of being close with people while having a conversation. It seems at this point, any guest who agrees to appear on her show should know that she’ll likely get up close and very personal with them. It could lead to some people opting out of being interviewed by Drew. However, Martha Stewart didn’t care for it, and set a boundary quickly with the host.
