Justin Trudeau seems to be firing back at Donald Trump and his threat to make Canada a part of the United States. The Canadian Prime Minister recently took a dig at the President-elect, saying Kamala Harris’s loss in the November 2024 elections indicates a lack of “progress” in America.
Trudeau dropped the bombshell at an event for the Equal Voice Foundation, where he spoke about gender representation in politics. While on stage, the politician lamented how the United States failed to get it right during the last elections. “It shouldn’t be that way. It wasn’t supposed to be that way,” he declared in a tense tone before adding:
“We were supposed to be on a steady, if difficult sometimes, march towards progress. And yet, just a few weeks ago the United States voted for a second time to not elect its first woman president.”
The Canadian politician further discussed how women’s rights are under attack “overtly and subtly” in the viral clip. Concluding the speech, Trudeau told listeners, “I want you to know that I am and always will be a proud feminist.” Fans, however, saw through his speech, calling it a weak shot at Trump. It is no news that the world leaders don’t particularly have a smooth relationship. However, things became more fractured following an awkward meeting last week.
Donald Trump Threatens To Absorb Canada, Trudeau Calls It A ‘Joke’
During an unexpected visit to Mar-a-Lago, Trudeau reportedly tried to talk Trump off his plans to impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico. The Republican believes the increased tariff will force governments to put effort into reducing the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the U.S. However, Trudeau wants to oppose it as the levy could be fatal to Canada’s economy.
Sources say that while the men enjoyed crab cocktails, Trump complained about the estimated $100 billion U.S. trade deficit with Canada. “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?” he reportedly told Trudeau, per Fox. The Apprentice star then suggested that Canada become the 51st US state, causing the prime minister and other Canadian officials to laugh nervously. Trump further stoked the flames of his threat with an AI-generated image of himself standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag.
Despite his heavy words, Trudeau maintains that Trump was only joking. “The president was telling jokes. The president was teasing us. It was, of course, on that issue, in no way a serious comment,” explained Canada’s Public Safety Minister.
With Trudeau seemingly shifting his allegiance to Team Harris, the next four years with Trump will undoubtedly be interesting to see.
