Rumor: PlayStation 6 Already Has a Release Window and It’s Not Looking Great for PS5 Owners

A tough sell

This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

It seems that another “next-gen” console has appeared in the wild after the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2. According to new rumors, the new PlayStation 6 could already have a release window and a few specs. However, I have to put this as a huge disclaimer before anything else happens: this is just a rumor. Things aren’t set in stone until Sony officially announces anything. Yet, if this turns out to be true, getting a PS6 in the supposed release window would not be the best idea and might even prove a bit counterproductive if you already have a PS5 or PS5 Pro.

PlayStation 6 Leaks Point at a 2027 Release Window

According to a report by Metro, leaker Kepler, who previously leaked the specs for the PS5 Pro, claims the PlayStation 6 could get a release window of 2027. The exact date is uncertain because, again, this is just a rumor. Furthermore, the leaker mentioned a few new things regarding the hardware’s specs.

PS6 is design complete and in pre-si validation already, with A0 tapeout scheduled for late this year.

Another user through NeoGAF asked the leaker about the GPU, and Kepler mentioned the following:

GPU is an early fork of gfx13, dunno how big.

While Kepler was right about the PS5 Pro, we should take this with a grain of salt because 2027 is still a ways away, and many things could change for the PS6, assuming the leaks are true to begin with.

If PS6 Launches in 2027, It Will Be a Tough Sell for PS5 Owners

Let’s assume for a bit that Sony’s new console actually launches in the year the leaker claims; it might be a tough sell for those with a PS5 or PS5 Pro. If we take a look at this console generation, many games are still getting PS4 versions, meaning those with an older console can still get it. Assuming that’s the road Sony is going for, many PlayStation 6 launch titles will also be compatible with the PS5 and PS5 Pro, so what justifies the purchase then? Nothing really. Furthermore, this console generation has felt quite underwhelming regarding games exclusive to the “newer” consoles, with only a few coming to mind.

If the PS6 truly comes in 2027, Sony should prepare a big lineup of games with some wild features to convince players to spend cash on the new console. If not, a PS5 or its Pro version will work for quite a while. Then again, knowing the gaming market, myself included, we are always looking at new consoles with excitement, and if history has taught us anything is that we’ll jump at the first chance to get Sony’s new console. Assuming the PS6 really surpasses the current-gen consoles considerably.
