Marvel Snap Scrambles to Look for New Publisher After TikTok Ban Shuts it Down, ‘To Make Sure This Never Happens Again’

Good thing it didn’t take 5 years for them to come back

It turns out the TikTok ban has affected not just social media doom-scrollers but also gamers, notably those who play Marvel Snap. That’s because Marvel Snap‘s publisher, Nuverse is a subsidiary of the same parent company that owns TikTok. Hence, the game was momentarily banned in the US, along with TikTok. Now that the TikTok ban has been lifted, Marvel Snap is planning ahead by looking for a new publisher.

The report came from Ben Brode himself, Chief Development Officer for Marvel Snap. Brode posted on BlueSky about the studio’s plans to change publishers to ensure that the Marvel Snap proxy ban doesn’t happen again. Additionally, Marvel Snap devs are working on bringing more in-house services for a more secure future for the game and its community.

Ben Brode then assured Marvel Snap players that they can continue playing the game as usual. However, Brode himself admitted that he did not enjoy the recent three-day weekend, especially after the TikTok ban shut their game down, which made a lot of players worried, particularly those who have spent money on microtransactions.

Trouble with TikTok

Brode and his team notably worked hard to restore service for the game over the weekend, even suggesting that VPN can circumvent the TikTok ban that also cut off access to Marvel Snap.

Meanwhile, Marvel Snap‘s publisher, Nuverse is owned by ByteDance, the aforementioned parent company of TikTok. Other publishing studios have also been affected by the TikTok ban, such as Moonton, who was responsible for Watcher of Realms. Similarly, Watcher of Realms was banned, like Marvel Snap, and only became available after Trump’s executive order to put the TikTok ban on hold.

As for the new potential publisher, Marvel Snap already had a collaboration with Marvel Rivals, which is published by NetEase Games. Hence, some expect NetEase to take up the mantle from Nuverse for Marvel Snap, though Ben Brode hasn’t announced any potential new publisher yet.
