According to recent reports from Korean media MTN via Google Translate, NCSoft has quietly canceled its Horizon-themed MMO. No, this is not the first-party live service project currently worked on by Guerilla Games. Yes, you read that right: Sony was hedging its bets with two Horizon online games. Giant robot dinosaurs and multiplayer sound like a guaranteed hit, but in the end, it still went extinct.
The MMO project reportedly started in 2021 under the codename Project H and then changed to Project Skyline. It was supposed to be released for PC and mobile platforms sometime in 2025 utilizing Unreal Engine 5. Amassing a significant team of around 140 developers and led by the company’s Lineage division, it rivaled other high-profile NCSoft projects including Lineage M.
However, internal feasibility reviews at NCSoft led to the cancellation of multiple projects, including the Horizon MMO. Said project has also been linked to the decision to halt several games in development amid a challenging period for the company.
NCSoft Co-chairman Kim Taek-jin recently rallied employees with a grim warning, urging them to ‘work to the bone’ to ensure a turnaround by 2025.
“We need to rebuild the company in the spirit of the venture that we started with,” said Taek-jin. “If we don’t turn around in 2025, there will be no future for [NCSoft] again, so let’s make 2025 a year where we work to the bone.”
Meanwhile, as mentioned above, Guerilla Games itself is working on another live service game set in the Horizon universe. This focus has reportedly shifted resources and delayed plans for Horizon‘s third mainline installment.
Recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment decided to cut its live service losses by shutting down a multiplayer God of War project. During a 2024 investor call, Sony’s President also announced delays for six of its major 12 upcoming live service games, which were expected to launch before March 2026. If you’re still dying for a cooperative robot dinosaur hunting game though, you might want to check out Tencent’s Light of Mortiram instead.
