With the end of October rapidly approaching, that means one thing: Super Mario Odyssey is just a few weeks away from its release! In preparation, stores nationwide are hosting a ten-minute demo of Mario’s newest adventure. And speedrunners have latched onto the very special opportunity in front of them.
Speedrunners‘ interest in the demo has sparked the creation of a brand new, highly-specific category in the community, and the videos on YouTube are pretty impressive. Those attempting to race through the short demo captured their footage in store with phones and handheld cameras. The sandy fields of Tostarena is the level currently available for the demo, and it didn’t take long for fans to master it.
The first speedrun was done by a gamer known as Fengari whose best time was seven minutes and 10 seconds. However, the runner with the best time at the moment is Jacob Babione, who managed to cut the time of the demo in half, with a run of five minutes and 28 seconds. The video above is pretty impressive; it’s hard to believe that Babione is still trying to break his own record.
The speedruns have become so popular that viewers have already started to get involved. Comments and suggestions on improving times are flooding in as people run out to try the demo themselves. Needless to say, we are excited to see what the speedrunning community will continue to do upon Super Mario Odyssey’s release.
