There have been plenty of high school heroes in video games. From Bully to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, teens have been fighting evil doers in their own unique way for almost as long as the video game genre has been around. That being said perhaps the world of gaming has never quite seen a hero like Daryl, star of Super Daryl Deluxe
Daryl is the new kid at Water Falls High School. His arrival coincides with the disappearance of students and faculty. Daryl is thrust into the mystery which sees him exploring huge classroom worlds based on high school subjects. History class might take you to an Ancient Egypt themed level. English class may take you to Ebenezer Scrooge’s mansion. Developer Dan & Gary Games boasts that Super Darul Deluxe will have hundreds of characters and “probably twice as many maps”.
The gameplay in the 2-D “RPGvania” Super Daryl Deluxe is all about customized combat. According to Dan Plate on Dan & Gary Games
Whether it’s melee or poison or combo or utility skills, Daryl’s mysterious self-help book grants him dozens of neato tush-kicking options to cater to almost any playstyle
The trick of the combat is that Daryl will only be able to equip a maximum of five skills at any given time. Therefore the choice of what skills to employ will be critical to success. The combat features freaky enemies with nods to high school cliques and 90s high school fashion (do you remember the girls wearing those thigh-high striped socks in 1993?). The level bosses are also Honor Students that need to be defeated at the end of each classroom.
Super Daryl Deluxe is expected to release in the spring of 2018, although a specific date has yet to be revealed. It will be released on PS4 and Steam.
