Chaos at the University of Cincinnati As Student Arrested Over Palestinian Flag Sparks Outrage

Kicking off.

A viral video capturing University of Cincinnati police arresting a student holding a Palestinian flag has ignited a firestorm of controversy online, with onlookers debating whether the incident was an unjust crackdown on free speech or a justified response to disorderly conduct.

The footage, shared widely on Reddit and social media, begins mid-arrest, showing officers struggling to detain the student while onlookers react in shock. But as the debate rages, conflicting narratives have emerged as to what actually occurred.

Yikes – the University of Cincinnati is arresting students on campus now for holding a Palestinian flag

According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, the arrest unfolded on Tuesday afternoon near Bearcat Commons, where three preachers (described by students as holding inflammatory signs reading “Muslims are terrorists” and “Women are property”) were engaging in a heated demonstration.

Nearby, members of a pro-Palestinian student group were fundraising when a 21-year-old student took out a Palestinian flag and positioned himself in front of the preachers. Campus police claim the student repeatedly “bumped into and stood in front of the preachers, ignoring officers’ instructions to move,” per arrest documents.

When officers attempted to detain him, reports say he resisted by using his elbows to prevent handcuffing and later kicked officers while being placed in a cruiser. He was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest (both misdemeanors) and held on a $1,500 bond, which has since been paid.

Reddit Reacts

Reddit erupted with strong opinions after the video surfaced, with some arguing that the arrest was an overreach and others claiming the student escalated the situation.

One user, u/Nvjds, summarized the police account:

“Says the kid stood in front of those fundamentalist religious protesters you always see on UC main (their signs today were ‘women are property’ and ‘Muslims are terrorists’), cops told him (with his flag) to move, he wouldn’t, then he elbowed cops as they tried to forcibly move him, and kicked at them getting into the cop car.”

Another commenter, u/bigasswhitegirl, suggested the student was fortunate not to face more severe charges:

“Incredibly lucky tbh. If they decided to tack on assaulting a police officer, that kid’s life would be over.”

However, many questioned the police response and whether the preachers, whose rhetoric was described as intentionally provocative, should have been allowed to remain undisturbed. u/AlsoCommiePuddin pointed out the difficulty in obtaining full footage:

“I’d get the body cam footage, but Ohio just passed a law where it costs $150.”

The arrest has already led to student protests outside the Hamilton County Justice Center, with activists decrying what they view as selective enforcement of free speech. “They were berating students walking by,” said Laila Shaikh, president of the pro-Palestinian student group, who also noted that similar preachers have disrupted campus in the past.

The student is set to appear in court Wednesday afternoon, and many are eager to see whether the case will lead to broader conversations about protest rights, free speech, and law enforcement practices on campus.
