Philadelphia Is Not Allowing People to Bag Their Recycling, and It’s Causing a Lot of Chaos

Recycling should not create more trash

Recycling is one of the best things you can do anywhere in the world. While some countries, states, and cities enforce it more than others, it’s a great habit and something that should be encouraged by many. However, there are some very strange situations when recycling is not too helpful, yet it isn’t the people’s fault. A Reddit user recently shared a video showing how Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is struggling because the city won’t let people bag their recycling. During windy days, this isn’t great, as all that trash flies out to the streets and pollutes even more.

All this trash on the street isnโ€™t all trash. Most of it (in my area at least) is recycling.

Redditor PopularPopulist shared the video on the Philadelphia subreddit, and in it we can see a street full of trash. However, the OP says this isn’t trash at all. Instead, it’s the recycling that flies away because the city won’t let people bag it. This is highly ironic, as people are trying to recycle to keep the city clean, but the same city isn’t letting them bag it, thus polluting more.

Many people say the lack of bags is because the recycling center in Philadelphia can’t process them. However, the OP has a good point: “As if we canโ€™t create some new jobs for people to open the recycling bags at the recycling center.”

Naturally, many agreed with the above statement and shared their thoughts on the matter:

“The answer is large recycling containers mid-block that residents can use all week long and trucks that simply empty the containers. You lose a parking spot and never see trash again. Europe had this solved a decade ago.” – jjphilly76 via Reddit.

“I joined a Philly spring clean up in West Philly for last Saturday and NO ONE showed up. Not even the leader. I even wandered nearby streets looking for them or other cleanup teams and found nothing. I WANT to clean up the city and it sucks.” – TotallyRedtide

While many people are trying to find solutions, the government should intervene to solve the matter. Trash flying around the street makes the city look bad and creates hazards. Hopefully, the authorities will see this and try to find a way of letting people bag their recycling or at least put it in a place where it won’t fly away.
