City of Los Angeles Pulls Plug on Free Childcare Program: ‘How Much Is Bass Reducing From Her Pay?’

It’s gonna get worse

While the COVID-19 pandemic was a difficult time for many, it also led to a few positive developments. One such example was the launch of several free childcare centers in Los Angeles, California, funded by federal relief dollars. The original plan aimed to renovate and open ten facilities, and although only eight were completed, it was still a significant improvement. This was especially true considering that only two free childcare centers existed in the city before the pandemic. However, the good times appear to be coming to an end. With funds running dry, the city has announced it can no longer cover the program’s costs. Officials are now looking for non-city providers to keep the remaining centers open and prevent their closure.

LA says it will no longer have money to run most of its free childcare centers

As of now, details about the future of the childcare program in Los Angeles remain unclear. With the city no longer funding the centers, it’s likely that parents may soon have to start paying fees for what were previously free services. According to LAist, the government will only be able to support these centers through late fall 2025. News of the potential closures hasn’t reached many residents yet, and even parents currently using the childcare centers have mostly learned about the situation through word of mouth.

If you thought the situation was already bad, things could get even tougher for parents across the U.S., not just in Los Angeles. Recently, rumors about defunding the Head Start program have been circulating online, sparked by a leaked draft. If this proposal moves forward, even more low-income families in California and beyond could face greater hardships due to the lack of accessible childcare.

Unsurprisingly, many Los Angeles residents are displeased with the news. Some Reddit users have even started criticizing Mayor Karen Bass, questioning why she hasn’t done more to support these free childcare programs. “How much is Bass reducing from her pay? That’s where she needs to cut costs,” one user commented.

Others have directed their frustration at the LAPD, arguing that too much of the city’s budget has been allocated to the police, diverting funds from programs that could benefit citizens more. “The amount of money the LAPD is leeching from our city is insane. We can’t have streetlights, pothole-free roads, or, apparently, childcare centers, but we can have a police force that refuses to do its job, and the ones who do end up killing and maiming people, leading to lawsuits that bleed LA dry,” another user remarked.
