South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace is once again under fire for an insensitive tweet. In her latest attempt to appeal to conservative voters, Mace mocked an all-gender restroom she encountered in Austin, writing that there are “only two genders” and claiming that “biology isn’t bigotry.” This kind of rhetoric isn’t new for Mace, who has consistently opposed transgender rights. Though she often brands herself as a supporter of women’s rights, she does not recognize transgender women as women. Prior to this incident, she even introduced a bill aimed at banning transgender individuals from using women’s restrooms.
Given her stance, it’s no surprise that Nancy Mace would share something like this online. Still, the reaction was far from supportive. Many people criticized her remarks, questioning whether she was trying to provoke outrage or genuinely believed what she was saying. One Redditor remarked, “What a dumba**. It means if the toilet is unoccupied, anyone can use it.”
Others expressed disbelief that a South Carolina Congresswoman could take issue with a unisex bathroom and label it as “woke.” “Someone should ask her which bathroom in her house is male only and which one is female only,” another user commented.
One Redditor also mocked Mace, noting that if they followed her line of reasoning, then “handicapped” might as well be considered a gender. “Male, female AND HANDICAPPED? 3 genders????” the user commented. Another user added, “I was assigned male at birth, transitioned to female at 32, and transitioned to disabled at 34! Checkmate, conservatives!”
Some users have had enough of the South Carolina Representative, believing that she was simply virtue signaling to gain more support from conservatives. They accused Mace of trying to divert public attention by targeting minorities, all while those in power and the wealthy continue to slash healthcare, suppress wages, and wreak havoc on the economy.
One user questioned why Mace was making such a fuss over a unisex bathroom. Considering that she has previously expressed discomfort with transgender individuals using women’s restrooms, the user argued that she should be pleased to see a designated space that doesn’t cross her self-imposed boundaries. “This is the third space all-gender toilet trans and nonbinary people can use without bothering their male/female toilets. Isn’t this what they said they wanted for people to create third options? What’s the problem?” the commenter asked.
A handful of people simply expressed their exasperation over the South Carolina Representative’s apparent obsession with bathrooms, noting that very few individuals are as fixated on what others do in restrooms as she is.
