A man in Pennsylvania is seeking legal advice after his wife was arrested for allegedly stealing goods worth $800. The man in question posted details of the incident on Reddit. The poster recounted that his wife went grocery shopping with their seven-year-old daughter. She used the “Scan It” app to scan her items, as that would make the self-checkout process much easier.
After the suspect paid, she was pulled aside for an “audit” and told to wait for the manager after they claimed to have found an $800 discrepancy. The woman offered to pay the balance, but shortly after, the police arrived and arrested her.
According to the poster’s story, when he went to pick up his daughter after his wife’s arrest, he was allowed to go home with the items that had been paid for. However, when he requested the receipt for the items that were allegedly stolen and classified as “retail theft,” he was denied access. They only told him he would get to see it in court, as it is now evidence.
Despite the retail store’s claims, the poster firmly believes that his wife would never do such a thing. Besides, the items the store claimed were not paid for could not have amounted to $800, because they only included bits like chicken, beef, and energy drinks. “I can’t even imagine what would be that much… My wife has honestly never done anything like this in her life, and I truthfully believe this is a mistake because I’ve always sent her any extra money we’ve needed for extra groceries.”
The Pennsylvania man further wrote that he believes there must have been a problem with the scanning app, or the officers failed to provide some vital information concerning the arrest.
Some social media users on Reddit somewhat agreed with the poster. One commented, “$800 is a large amount. Something is missing from this story. Either on the cops’ end or your wife’s.”
Another suggested that the poster should look up his wife’s credit card transaction history to help them get an idea of what was paid for. The poster replied to the comment, stating that he has tried to respectfully question his wife about the incident, and she still insists on her innocence. He also pointed out that their daughter confirmed that she had scanned everything, which he believes because they have no reason to steal food. “I’m extremely confused.”
On the other hand, one user commented that the poster’s wife may have been arrested because she was stealing small amounts from the store for some time. The user pointed out that this line of action is typical of stores like Target and Walmart. The poster then replied to the comment, still insisting that his wife “claims she’s never done that.”
Another user added, “Mistakes do happen. People also lie about things. Both can happen for a variety of reasons, benign and otherwise…”
Subsequently, the OP posted an edit thanking people for responding to his query. He wrote, “I understand why people are so quick to assume she did it, and I’m also prepared that I may learn something about my wife I didn’t know.”
He also stated that they had arranged a meeting with their lawyers and would see what came up in discovery.
