Benson Boone‘s 2025 American Music Awards performance is being criticized all over social media. The pop star tried to wow viewers by doing one of his iconic flips on stage. However, the move received a lukewarm response since fans feel he’s overdone it. Now, they’re urging Boone to change things up or else people will start losing interest in him.

Fans React to Benson Boone’s American Music Awards Performance

On Monday, May 26, Benson Boone appeared at the 2025 American Music Awards as both a nominee and a performer. He was up for a total of five awards, including Song of the Year, Favorite Music Video, and Favorite Pop Song for his hit single Beautiful Things from his debut album, Fireworks & Rollerblades. While he didn’t win in any of the categories he was nominated for, Boone still appeared to have a good night.

Apart from sharing a funny moment with Nikki Glaser and Heidi Klum, Boone attempted another one of his iconic flips on stage. He was performing his latest single, Mystical Magical, from his upcoming second album, American Heart, when he went for the move. Although he successfully landed it, viewers weren’t all that impressed since they’ve seen him do the flip several times now. “Come up with something else,” one person wrote. “The flipping is getting old.” Another claimed that Boone has done the flip so much that it’s “all he’s known for.” Several other fans agreed, calling the trick “boring” and “corny.”

Should He Stop Or Keep Going?

However, other fans wished he would stop the flipping for safety reasons. They fear one day he might get seriously hurt if he fails to land the move. “I worry something might happen,” read one comment. “What’s his backup plan when he twists his ankle?” asked another fan.

After Benson Boone’s 2025 AMAs performance was criticized online, Glaser defended the singer in a backstage interview with Entertainment Tonight. The comedian and actress said she’s aware some fans might say that Boone has overdone the flip. However, she doesn’t care. In fact, she encouraged him to keep going. “Let that boy flip!” Glaser told the outlet.

What’s Next

Benson Boone has come a long way. Years before performing at the 2025 AMAs, he was just a small artist. Boone got his start by appearing on American Idol in 2021. After dropping out of the competition, he went on to share his music on TikTok, where it went viral and led him to get signed. He found early success with his singles Ghost Town and In the Stars. However, it was his 2024 single Beautiful Things that really made him a star.

The track peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received multiple awards and nominations. Some of its biggest feats have been winning Top Billboard Global 200 Song at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards and Song of the Year at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards.

Now, Boone seems to want to replicate that success with his new single Mystical Magical. The track is from his upcoming album American Heart, which is set to be released on June 20.
