Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is ArcSys’ Best Looking Game Yet; Mahvel’s Back?

Marvel is back, but without Capcom

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls was just announced as a new 4v4 tag-team fighting game coming in 2026 to PlayStation, Steam, and Epic Games only, with no Xbox version currently planned. The project is being worked on by PlayStation, Arc System Works, and Marvel Games, a match made in heaven. But with Capcom nowhere in sight, this kills the Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 hype train, at least for a while.

The developer, Arc System Works, is a studio known for making the best-looking fighting games out there, hands down. Titles like Guilty Gear Strive and Dragon Ball FighterZ look great to this day, and Tokon isn’t any different. The game features a highly stylized, anime-inspired look that extends to the character designs as well. According to Arc producer Takeshi Yamanaka, the team initially tested a Western comic-book shader but reverted to their signature Japanimation style after feedback from Marvel.

The gameplay will focus on simplified controls designed to be newcomer-friendly while still offering competitive depth. Players can choose to master one character, but matches will still include tag-ins and assist mechanics. Director Kazuto Sekine said the team chose a 4v4 format to maximize on-screen action and channel the crossover spirit of the Marvel universe. It’s a fresh take compared to the 2v2 or 3v3 structures seen in previous Marvel vs. Capcom entries.

The revealed roster includes characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Storm, Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), Doctor Doom, Star-Lord, and Ms. Marvel. Yamanaka explained that they focused on fan-favorite icons while reserving some room for surprises, including characters who’ve never appeared in a fighting game. Notably absent, though, are the X-Men, a curious omission given their long history in Marvel fighters.

Stages will include destructible environments and transitions between areas, adding some variety mid-battle. Locations like Marvel’s version of New York are filled with fan-service easter eggs, with cinematic “Ultimate Skills” tailored to each character’s lore.

This announcement, although very exciting, casts some huge doubts on the future of the Marvel vs. Capcom series. With Arc now developing a full-fledged Marvel fighter and Capcom out of the picture entirely, the prospects for MvC4 seem dimmer than ever before.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls might be Arc System Works’ most visually advanced title yet, and it’s telling that they’ve now been handed the reins to a property as massive as Marvel. If Riot Games wants to compete, 2XKO is going to have to pull out all the stops.
