The Nintendo Switch takes over in Japan as it outpaces PlayStation 2 in record sales. PlayStation 2 was the fastest-selling in its first-year in the country, but the console has now been overtaken by the Nintendo Switch.

Last week alone, 269,684 units were sold according to Media Create. The PlayStation 4 only sold 50,662 units in the same week which is over 200,000 less than the Switch.

The PlayStation 2 sold 3,016,622, while the Switch has beat this by selling 3,258,083 units since launch up until December 24, 2017. 25% of Nintendo’s industry sells in Japan and it was only two weeks ago that Nintendo Switch sold 10 million worldwide.

But, it was only yesterday that The Wall Street Journal announced that Nintendo has told outside game developers that it will be delaying delivering the 64-gigabyte game cards. The second half of 2018 was when Nintendo was going to make the cards available for partner developers, but it has been pushed back due to 2019 due to technical issues, according to the article.

Serkan Toto, a game-industry consultant based in Tokyo, told The Wall Street Journal that:

“2018 will be another successful year for Nintendo, better than what it had seen this year.”

Suggesting that the data-heavy games are not essential for the Switch.

With Sales doing so well for the Nintendo Switch and the top game on it, Super Mario Odyssey, selling already 1,292,281 copies since it launched late October, it will be interesting to see if the delay in the 64-gigabyte game cards will affect next years performance. Especially since L.A Noire is already having trouble with size since the digital version is too big to fit in the Nintendo Switch’s internal memory.
