First they target immigrants, then they target U.S. citizens. As the days go by, it becomes more and more clear that the United States has shifted toward a form of dictatorial authoritarianism under the Trump administration. Concerns about ICE’s blatant disregard for due process have been steadily rising. The organization itself has often been described as a loyal mad dog for Trump. Now, among those who appear to support this approach is Maryland Sheriff Chuck Jenkins.
Jenkins has always been a controversial figure, but his latest statement has made him even more so. During a recent Q&A session at a public meeting, a woman asked him to clarify his stance regarding ICE. She wanted to know what he would do if he found out that ICE had apprehended someone who was believed to be a U.S. citizen.
His answer was simple and unsettling. He said there was nothing he could do. The response drew surprised reactions from many in the audience. The woman said she appreciated his honesty but reminded him that something like that had already happened in Florida.
Chuck Jenkins quickly replied that such a thing had not yet happened in Maryland, which prompted a heated reaction from the crowd, with several people shouting, “Not yet!” Ultimately, he stated that everything was under ICE’s discretion.
Understandably, many people were deeply upset after hearing what Sheriff Jenkins said. Many believed that, as a sheriff, his duty should be to prioritize the well-being and rights of U.S. citizens, not to submit to ICE or blindly follow Trump’s agenda. Several critics pointed out that this kind of behavior was not surprising, given Jenkins’ long-standing record. One user even called him a “Trump sycophant,” while others stressed the importance of voting him out and removing him from his position.
That goal may be within reach. Chuck Jenkins is up for re-election in 2026. The primary election for Frederick County Sheriff is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, 2026, with the general election taking place on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. As one Redditor put it, “Please, for the love of God, vote him out and tell everyone you know to do the same.”
Some users expressed strong dislike, and in some cases, outright hostility toward the Maryland sheriff. Many called for Chuck Jenkins to lose his job, while others argued that the office of sheriff is outdated and should be abolished entirely.
One particularly pointed comment stated, “If Chuck Jenkins wants to prove he’s not a racist s***bag who wants to engage in ethnic cleansing, he can turn over the employers of undocumented workers to ICE for an all-expense-paid trip to El Salvador. Any ‘crackdown’ that spares those who hire immigrants not eligible to work is just racist demagoguing.”
