You want to believe the town or city you live in has your best interest in mind. However, sometimes you find out things about your area that just really bum you out. This is what happened for one woman who lives in Oregon. She recently found out the locals consider it a “sundown town.” But what does this mean and why is she concerned about her town being represented in this way?
Rae (@rae_dusoleil on TikTok) explained in a video she lives in Astoria, Oregon. Recently, she watched a video on sundown towns, which tend to be all-White or even exclude non-White residents. They’re known as “sundown” because non-White residents are not supposed to remain in town after sunset. Rae went on to say she used to live in the south and expected “disgusted, racists little “a*****e,” but Astoria. She thought it was “super progressive.”
Later, watched another video that included a map of where people tend to have more racists attitudes. To her surprise, she was right in the middle of a giant, red dot. She added, “And now that I think about it, I hardly ever see Black people here.” Rae went on to say she had a message to share: “If you are somebody who thinks you are better than other people because of the color of your skin, you are f*****g stupid” and have a “Neanderthal little mind.” Rae may have been surprised to find she now has over 100k views on her video. Clearly, her message is being heard!
Rae also went on to say most of the people molesting others, shooting up schools, and engaging in other nefarious acts, “most often are white people.” She says this teary-eyed, realizing she isn’t comfortable living in Astoria anymore. She even notes, “I’m going to move” while going on her rant.
One commenter was not at all surprised to hear this: “Oregon is a sundown state.” Another person replied this this, “Sad to say, I just learned this this year. We have some growth to do in this country.” One other commenter pointed out, “Oregon was literally founded to be a White only state, it’s beyond ‘pretty racist’ it’s one of the worst offenders.” I hope Rae finds peace wherever she chooses to reside, and keeps spreading her message. It’s an important one for people to hear, no matter how obvious it may seem.
