Having a washing machine is extremely useful in any household, and if we’re talking about a dryer, even better. So finding a rental property that includes both is like finding a clothes cleansing treasure. At least if the landlord isn’t like the one in Maryland, who wanted to upgrade the dryer of their rental property and, in the process, left the entire laundry room unusable. Now neither the dryer nor the washing machine can be used as they should be.
Redditor cracra55 shared a photo of their washing machine and dryer on r/Tenant. According to OP, they rent a house in downtown Maryland that fortunately includes both appliances in the rent, but the laundry room is now unusable. This whole problem started because, to begin with, the laundry room is just a closet designed for a stacked washing machine and dryer unit. However, the landlord stacked the appliances side by side, making it difficult for anyone to comfortably enter the room. But the situation worsened when the dryer stopped working and the landlord wanted to upgrade to a larger one. However, the owner did not consider the dimensions of the “laundry closet.”
With the change, OP can no longer open the dryer properly because it hits the doorframe, as we verified because cracra55 shared more photos and responded to several comments. In addition, the closet no longer has a door, just so that the dryer could fit. To make matters worse, if someone wants to reach the washing machine, they have to climb over the appliances. Even if OP wanted to change the layout of the closet, they couldn’t because the washing machine’s power cord is too short. This is why many Redditors suggested several options for renovating the space. Like user Ordinary-Depth-7835, who proposed “Have him take out the wall :)“
Another concern raised by Redditors was the installation in the closet, as Own_Reaction9442 wrote, “That long foil duct run is probably not code either, FWIW. It’s done all the time, though“. This was something that OP did not overlook and asked more about. The same user responded that the risk would be lint building up, which usually affects dryers. The most curious thing is that cracra55 added “Oh you’re good. I’m pretty sure the reason the old dryer broke was due to the heavy lint buildup, which is now cleared!“.
So, the already poor installation affected the old dryer and made the landlord buy a bigger one. Let’s hope the owner does something about the closet and pays more attention to lint buildup.
