Couch co-op has been making a comeback in recent years thanks to the indie scene, which has added a lot of new installments to the genre. And while shooters may have reigned supreme back in the days of LAN connections, puzzle games are the current draw in the couch co-op community. Perspective bending indie puzzler DYO hopes to show fans why that is the case.
DYO is an upcoming 1-2 player local co-op puzzle platformer game that tasks players with controlling two minotaurs. The goal is simple: get bother minotaurs to the end of the level. But in order to do so, players will have to overcome obstacles and traps by using the games unique split-screen perspective.
The main mechanic players will have at their disposal is the central divide of the split screen. While each minotaur is able to be operated independently, locking the central divide will allow them to cross over into each other’s half. The gameplay trailer below depicts exactly how the concept works.
While DYO may look like a game that can only be played with two people, the developers have emphasized that it can be played alone as well. Citing Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons as the closest example, their Steam page states the game will have “No precision platforming. No enemies. No timers. Just you and your brains.”
No need to worry about making mistakes either, as DYO will allow players to rewind any errors. And there will certainly be plenty of trial and error. Not only will the game feature 30 playable levels, there will also be a level editor that allows for easily creating and sharing your own puzzles.
DYO originally started out as a holiday project for three game design students from Berlin. The free demo is currently available for download here, with the full release arriving on February 14, 2018, to Steam.
