Skeleton Dog ‘So Emaciated He Could Barely Walk’ Needs a Home After Proving ‘Resilience’ in Texas

When Koa first arrived at Catie’s Foster Fam in Houston, Texas, he looked like a ghost of a dog. Shelter staff described him as “so emaciated he could barely walk,” and the heartbreaking intake photo showed nothing but skin, bones, and uncertainty. For many, he was a reminder of Coral, a dog the rescue had lost under similar circumstances. The fear that Koa might not make it was heavy in the air.

But Koa refused to give up.

Thanks to round-the-clock care from his fosters and immediate medical treatment, the frail “skeleton dog” slowly transformed. With steady meals, patience, and love, he gained strength. Today, the dog who once struggled to stand is full of energy, playfulness, and affection.

“He’s truly transformed, and now he’s ready to be adopted,” the rescue shared on Facebook. “Koa is yet another example of the resilience of dogs.”

Now healthy, neutered, heartworm-negative, and fully vetted, Koa is ready to leave behind his painful past. His fosters describe him as sweet, playful, and eager for companionship, whether with other dogs, cats, or an active family. He does well in his crate, enjoys affection, and is quick to make friends.

Koa’s story is one of survival against the odds, but also of what can happen when a community opens its heart. His fosters took him in, not knowing if he’d make it, and their courage gave him a chance at life.

Koa is available for adoption in Houston and out of state. Anyone ready to give this survivor the forever home he deserves can apply at caitiesfosterfam.org/adopt
