New York is known for having some colorful characters, and Long Island is a subset of that. From Nassau to Suffolk County, it’s a melting pot for all types of attitudes. While some neighbors prefer to fight in the open, others choose more passive-aggressive ways of getting the point across. A Bellmore resident’s video went viral after capturing a neighbor’s subtle–yet effective–message to their neighbors.
Creating a wake when pulling into the dock is illegal in most places. On Long Island, this is a law that everyone is familiar with. Despite knowing this, it doesn’t stop boaters from continuing to speed in and out of harbors. One Bellmore resident, tired of the constant chaos, decided to send a message to their fellow boaters: In the form of a shrub, shaped like a person, flipping the bird to oncoming boat traffic.
The reaction from viewers was classic, with nearly everyone applauding the move. One Instagram user commented, “Only on Long Island,” while another said, “Oh my God, this is great.” Others pointed out that the large shrub resembled Homer from The Simpsons, with other viewers agreeing in the comments.
Some made remarks about Long Island in general, saying something like this isn’t all that surprising. “South Shoring it,” one user commented. Another backed up the Bellmore resident, saying, “It’s the law. Within 100 feet of a bulkhead or dock. Excessive wake causes a lot of damage to boats, docks, and bulkheads. Don’t be an a**hole!”
Another user debated this, saying, “Expecting someone to operate anything at 5 MPH is ridiculous.” If nothing else, you can’t claim Long Islanders don’t have a sense of humor. One viewer proved this by ending the thread with, “Does anyone know if they do this up for Christmas with lights?” A very merry Bellmore Christmas, indeed.
