Over the last few decades, rates of juvenile crime have actually been decreasing. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean it’s completely eradicated. Instances of vandalism can impact entire communities and uproot lives. A Florida elementary school recently endured a bout of vandalism causing thousands of dollars in damages. What surprised the community, though, is just how young the offenders were. They’re barely into their teens and already causing property damage that rivals older adults!
Mike Chitwood, the sheriff for Volusia County, Florida, posted a TikTok video outlining the incident. He explains Friendship Elementary was vandalized by a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old. The boys did a whopping $50,000 in damages to the school’s media center. This was allegedly done during the daytime hours, only to return in the evening to do more damage. Sheriff Mike shared photos and videos, too. “Just ask yourself why?” he asks.
The damage is immense, with chairs broken, technology scattered, displays toppled, books ripped, and more. It breaks your heart. These were tools used by other students to sharpen their minds. At the same time, it’s important to understand why the young boys did it (even if it doesn’t excuse it).
Apparently, the mothers of the two boys recognized them from videos and photos, then turned them in. When the children were questioned, they admitted to the crime. They also returned some items they stole from the school. When they were asked why they did it, they both said, “We were bored.”
“Don’t know about ya’ll but me, I ain’t never in my 32 years of life ever been this bored,” one commenter admitted. I guess I would respect the honesty from the two kids. One person asked, “Why not require the children to pay it back? Wage garnishment until the $50k, plus interest is paid off. Whether they manage it by the time they are 25 or 50, consequences should have impact.”
One person replied, “That will all take time. The immediate cost will be absorbed by tax payers.” That’s probably true. In the end, you just hope the school recovers and those teens get the help they need. It’s hard to believe this crime was motivated by only boredom.
