Politics has always been a decisive factor dividing relationships, communities, and countries, with the present US being a prime example. And among successful of Hollywood celebrities, it’s no different. Holes star Shia LaBeouf has publicly admitted that it was politics that caused him to break ties with his good friend and mentor Jon Voight for years. According to Entertainment Weekly, things had gotten so heated between the two that LaBeouf even threatened to get physical with the Hollywood veteran.
“I told him I was going to come to his house and we were going to fist fight,” LaBeouf told the press, saying that he was furious when he and Voight got into a political debate over the phone. After hanging up, the Transformers actor said that he “didn’t talk to him for years,” claiming that “Voight’s politics and mine are very different.” It’s no secret that the 86-year-old Midnight Cowboy star is an avid supporter of Donald Trump, someone whom LaBeouf clearly disagrees with. Many will remember how the Eagle Eye actor did the whole “He Will Not Divide Us” demonstration against President Trump back in 2017.

While the two have reportedly mended their relationship with an understanding of each other’s differences, plenty of fans would have hoped for such a fistfight to go down between LaBeouf and Voight. “It can be the exhibition fight at the White House next year!” exclaims a Redditor. “Let them fight,” agreed another commenter. Unfortunately, for The Greatest Game Ever Played cast member, not everyone feels like he’s worth supporting, even if he is against someone who vocally defends Trump.
“Both are pieces of sh*t. Just for different reasons,” remarks an online user. Another chimed in, saying that they wouldn’t vouch for either. Even if LaBeouf has been outspoken against racism and hate, that doesn’t redeem him from abusing his ex-girlfriend. “He could’ve been on the correct side of history,” the commenter concludes with disappointment. “I’d rather see Angelina Jolie fist fight with Jon Voight,” joked a third. In the end, no one is going down on each other in a brawl, but it’s clear that neither is an ideal spokesperson for politically related issues.
If one thing can be said, though, it is the irony of Shia LaBeouf’s statement back in 2017 about Trump not dividing the nation. As one person put it: “He did in fact divide us.” Plenty of celebrities are fed up with the current White House administration as well, with some even condemning a prominent Trump supporter who was recently killed, Charlie Kirk. Whether it’s celebrities, government officials, or just average American citizens, politics will continue dividing the country until something drastically changes for the better.
