Swarm of Bugs Plague Popular New Jersey Gastropub Kitchen, Health Inspection Reveals

Bug problems.

The Somerset County Department of Health dealt a blow to popular New Jersey gastropub TWENTY/20 Taphouse during a routine inspection on September 22. Despite its reputation for craft beers, scratch-made dishes, and strong online reviews, the establishment received a rather dismal score of 57 after inspectors documented widespread sanitation problems, including a swarm of gnats in the kitchen.

The restaurant, known for its rustic-industrial vibe, expansive bar seating, Sunday brunch, and private dining room, has been praised by guests for its menu of flatbreads, burgers, salads, and vegetarian specialties. However, inspectors said the facility’s behind-the-scenes conditions told a different story.

The inspection report flagged several violations, including a lack of certified food handlers on site, a contaminated ice machine coated with black and pink film, malfunctioning refrigerators that held food above safe temperatures, and improper food storage. Containers of chicken wings were thawing at room temperature, unlabeled sauces and spices were found in the kitchen, and cutting boards were discolored from overuse.

The most glaring violation was the discovery of “lots of gnats present in the downstairs kitchen,” with inspectors ordering the restaurant to increase pest control immediately.

It has to be said that the inspection findings stand in stark contrast to the gastropub’s reputation among patrons, who often praise the welcoming staff, inviting atmosphere, and consistently flavorful food. A quick search on Google reviews finds that diners highlight memorable service experiences, freshly prepared dishes such as spinach artichoke dip and burgers, and love the warm rustic setting with both indoor and outdoor seating. Many describe the venue as a go-to destination for birthdays, family gatherings, and casual nights out, which makes the health department’s poor grade all the more surprising.

The Somerset County Department of Health will return for a reinspection. Until then, the establishment must correct every violation, from sanitizing equipment and repairing refrigeration units to eliminating the pest problem. The failing grade of 57 will remain in effect until compliance is achieved.

Let’s hope they do, as their food does look excellent, and there are clearly plenty of happy patrons who would be disappointed to learn of the health standard violations if Google reviews are anything to go by.
