Manhattan Diner Says Michelin-Star Restaurant Served ‘Vile’ Squash Blossom and Charged $500 Without Fixing the Mistake: ‘I Would Complain and Refuse to Pay for It’

She’s likely never going back

Whenever I hear about fine dining and Michelin stars in the same sentence, I picture a restaurant with expensive but carefully prepared meals. I also imagine customers receiving attentive service that goes beyond what they might expect at an ordinary restaurant. However, one woman’s recent visit to a Michelin-starred restaurant in Manhattan challenged that idea when she left, calling it the worst dining experience she has ever had. The woman had taken her partner to the restaurant for a five-course prix fixe menu and expected a special evening, but things went sideways very fast.

This was a really bad exception for us. We’ve never had a bad experience dining at a Michelin rated restaurant before. We really splurged on this dinner, and left very disappointed (the rest of the courses were only ok at best) and we both got back to our hotel with significant intestinal distress. I genuinely may not consume a squash blossom for the rest of my life because of how vile this was. I’m not even able to put it into descriptive words other than it was possibly the worst thing I’ve ever consumed.

In a TikTok video, she explained that the evening began smoothly until the second course arrived: a fried squash blossom. “I took a big bite and I started chewing it and when I tell you it was the most vile thing I have possibly ever put in my mouth I’m not exaggerating,” she said. Thinking it might just be her own taste, she encouraged her partner to try it. They reacted the same way.

A waiter checked with the kitchen and returned to admit the dish had been prepared incorrectly because “the stamen or the pistol was still left in,” which can create a strong, unpleasant flavor. He assured them it probably wasn’t harmful, but the taste lingered for the rest of the meal. “Honestly as the courses persisted that taste still stayed in my mouth,” she added, noting that she even looked online for safety advice and read that such an error was “completely unacceptable” for a Michelin-star restaurant.

The couple paid nearly $500, and while the staff offered a glass of cider to help with the taste, no manager came to the table, and the problematic course wasn’t removed from the bill. “I come to Manhattan quite a bit. I have never had an experience like this,” she said, asking viewers if such treatment is normal for a Michelin-rated restaurant.

What People Are Saying About the Manhattan Restaurant Incident

Many commenters agreed the restaurant should have handled the mistake very differently. “For 500 dollar they definitely sbould have make things right and do it in a proper way [sic],” one person wrote. A second asked whether she had requested compensation and added, “I would not have paid until the manager came to discuss this occurrence. If the manager did not offer compensation, I would have insisted on it in a polite fashion.”

Others stressed that the meal should not have been fully charged. “No matter what the rating of the restaurant, their reaction should be apologetic and making right on your experience. You shouldn’t have to pay for the whole meal,” a viewer said. “I would have DEMANDED a reduction in the price!” someone else exclaimed. One comment simply read, “I would complain and refuse to pay for it.”

Some noted that expensive restaurants can still fall short. “Awww, hell no! Sometimes it is the highest end places that don’t take care of you!” a user observed. Another called the error “a very basic mistake – not Michelin stars quality,” and concluded, “They should have comped your entire meal… I hope you didn’t leave a tip.”
