On Sunday morning, September 28, a shooting and subsequent fire took place in a Mormon church in Michigan. The incident happened at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc and led to six to eight victims. Though information on the shooting is still scarce, police reported that the shooter was quickly taken down and the church was set on fire in the midst of the incident.
According to NY Post and a news video posted by Fox News, the Grand Blanc Township Police Department posted about the incident, saying that the shooter was quickly taken down upon arrival. They stated that there is “NO threat to the public at this time” but said that the “church is actively on fire.” Six to nine victims were reported but police did not comment on the conditions of the victims. It is believed that one person may have tragically passed from their injuries. For others present at the church, they were directed to a reunification pavilion and kept safe. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and FBI also responded.
Authorities have reported that the shooter arrived at the church in a vehicle, which they rammed through the front of the church. This happened just as a large service was starting. The shooter began opening fire on those inside but was taken down and killed by responding officers. The shooter also intentionally set the fire inside the church, which quickly grew and engulfed the church. Police are also saying that they may find more victims when they can access the inside of the church.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated that her “heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc Community.” She went on to say, “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful for the first responders who took action quickly.” She said the situation will continue to be monitored and more information will become available in time.
Attorney General Pam Pondi also commented on the incident, “Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling. Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy.” In photos taken of the scene, you could see smoke billowing into the sky. The streets were packed with first responders. It’s a tragic scene and one we are all too familiar with in America.
