It seems that many people always look for the easy way out, even if it means putting others at risk. Although there are laws to protect people, even within their own homes, there will always be abusive individuals who need to be clearly stopped. For example, this landlord in Florida is putting their tenant at risk by allowing them to stay in a place in direct contact with asbestos. Obviously, no one wants to take responsibility for the issue or find a solution for the tenant.

Is this Legal for my apartment to do this?

Redditor Plastic_Ladder_6250 shared a photo on r/legal of their small studio apartment, invaded by plastic curtains that hide their windows. According to the OP, they received a notice on Friday, September 26, informing them that some workers would replace the windows in their apartment on that same day. But when OP arrived at their apartment, they found “a giant plastic sheet covering where my windows are with an industrial air purifying machine hooked into the sheet.” Not only that, but the OP also noticed that the company hired by the landlord left a “Danger Asbestos” sign inside the Florida property. Furthermore, the plan was for OP to continue with their everyday life, alongside the construction mess, until Monday, September 29.

That is why OP was very concerned and asked about all their available options and whether the landlord can actually act in this way.

‘Asbestos is fine… as long as it isn’t disturbed. I wouldn’t be staying there,’ answered One_Lawfulness_7105. OP responded directly to this comment, letting everyone know that the landlord did not offer to arrange for them to stay in a hotel during the repairs or to deduct the cost from their rent. So they believed that OP would wait 48 hours in his apartment, which was in a deplorable and hazardous condition.

‘Get a lawyer immediately. They need to be putting you in a hotel until this is remedied, said the user, SeriouslyCrafty. However, many other users said that he could also contact some tenants’ associations. Landlords or property management companies must find safe shelter for tenants when they need to do repairs to the properties.

Unfortunately, the days passed, but there has been no update on this case. We can only hope that OP was able to find somewhere safe to sleep for two days and that those responsible for renting the studio paid all the accommodation costs.
