Life sometimes can be rough, and for some, it can even be rougher, even to the point where you lose everything. That said, a woman living in New York City had the worst luck when she took an Uber home after a Saturday night outing. After arriving at her house, she realized she had lost her iPhone, but that wasn’t all. Her bank accounts were wiped clean, including those of her parents. On top of that, her identity, such as her photos, personal information, emails, and everything else, had been stolen.

Naturally, such a disastrous event as losing your finances and identity is irreversibly horrible, but her judgment day wasn’t over yet. The New Yorker explains that she had to move out of her apartment, but the new place she had miraculously been able to find wasn’t available due to squatters. Her and her parents’ lives are now in shambles, and with nothing left to do or lose, she uploaded a video explaining her situation to TikTok. It goes without saying that plenty of people were very supportive and sympathetic to her situation.

Dear hacker youโ€™re so smart, & talented use it for good. lol the squatters were my breaking point. Also my packages got stolen last week ๐Ÿ˜‚ like whatโ€™s going on. Is this my sign do I need to move?? Iโ€™m never this vaurnable online but genuinely like all these things Iโ€™m just numb atp lol. Is there something I need to change in my life? Iโ€™m so confused. But learn from me and how to protect yourself. #protectyourself #hacker #hack #squatters #stolen

“This is so messed up,” says a commenter. “This is NOT your fault. I am so sorry this happened to you,” remarked another. Some began a conspiracy in their head, saying that the whole thing “feels like an Apple inside job. FBI,” as the New York woman detailed how Apple was very unhelpful in the whole matter. The person who’d stolen her iPhone had destroyed her account beyond recovery and had even bricked her Mac and tablet. Needless to say, the woman feels like she’s at her wits’ end and is still trying to damage-control the disaster. However, some people feel that the facts didn’t add up to the point that she could even be faking her story.

Some Believe the New York Woman’s Story Is Fake

First, many point out that she had gone home, taken a shower, and even gone to bed before she realized that her lost iPhone situation was much worse than she had thought the night before. Why in the world hadn’t she panicked the moment she discovered her phone was missing? “Midst all this panic, she managed to get a shower in and fall asleep lol,” remarked a Redditor. Although she didn’t mention it, many believe she was too drunk or wasted to consider the severity of her stolen phone.

Others say that things don’t check out with her story about how the thief spent all her money. “I canโ€™t understand how this could happen, not to mention how quickly money was drained,” says a Reddit user. “I literally sent a $15k earnest money ACH transfer the other day that took more than 24 hours.” Fake or not, what happened to the New York woman is awful, and what the thief did to her is unforgivable. Yet, it’s certainly a good reminder to always keep an eye on your smartphone out in public; someone could ruin your life if they got hold of it.
