Michael J. Fox Forced To Confront Mortality As Parkinson’s Progresses: ‘He’s Accepted What’s Coming’

Michael J. Fox continues to inspire millions with his optimism and courage while continuing his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease. At 64, the beloved Back to the Future star has given a lot of thought to his mortality and reveals a softer, more vulnerable side. One who chooses peace over pain, and calm over chaos.

Fox’s latest comments reveal someone who’s finally made peace with his own mortality.” According to Radar Online, Fox recently discussed what it’s been like to live with Parkinson’s for more than three decades.

He was just 29 when he learned of his diagnosis. Beginning decades marked by injuries, surgeries, and daily battles most can’t imagine. Fox carries no bitterness. He has remained incredibly open over the years, admitting he has learned to face the reality of the hand he has been dealt. While there’s no set timeline for the disease, he’s come to a point of acceptance.

“There are not many people who have had Parkinson’s for 35 years,” he says in a wide-ranging interview that touched on mortality. “I’d like to just not wake up one day. That’d be really cool. I don’t want it to be dramatic. I don’t want to trip over furniture, smash my head.”

Michael J. Fox Endures Decades of Struggles

Those closest to Michael J.Fox say that over the past several months, the actor has changed. They describe him as becomming more reflective, and focusing on serenity and gratitude. A close friend shared that Fox wants only peace. “He’s accepted what’s coming with incredible grace.” The last three decades have not been kind to Michael J. Fox. His fight with Parkinson’s has left him with many broken bones, surgeries, and setbacks.

His days are now spent mostly in a wheelchair, learning to adapt and accept each day as it comes. “I take it easy now,” he told the Times. “I don’t walk that much anymore. However, I can walk. But it’s not pretty, and it’s a bit dangerous. So I just roll that into my life, you know—no pun intended.”

Yet even in the face of ongoing physical decline, his sense of humor endures. “That’s another thing about dying,” he states with humor. “I just haven’t had time.”

“I have a lot left to do,” he said, proving that even while preparing for life’s inevitable end, his heart remains full of purpose. At times, he may appear somber, but Michael J. Fox is determined to remain a fighter.

He continues to face life with humor, heart, and an incredible sense of grace. He adds he is most proud to remain an inspiration to his family, friends, and fans as well as a role model for others with Parkinson’s.
