They say when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, but when life gives you mushrooms coming out of your ceiling, you’d best be calling an inspector because you have a serious mold problem. That said, one man was living in quite the poorly ventilated New York apartment when he discovered fungi protruding from his bathroom’s ceiling. Mold is one thing and is dangerous, but when the conditions are dreadful enough to grow shrooms, something is definitely wrong.

“Uh oh, you my friend have a moisture problem,” remarked a commenter on the man’s Reddit post featuring the fungi growth in his New York flat. “Or there’s a body up there,” joked another. “$8000 per month,” said a third sarcastically, referring to the outrageous pricing of housing these days. Others chimed in with their story, expressing how their landlord just pulled them out and walked off or that they were told to just “paint over it.”

One person recognized the severity of mushrooms poking through the ceiling: “That ceiling is DONE. Needs to be completely torn out.” OP responded, saying that his landlord handled the issue by just cutting a massive hole in the ceiling, pulling out the fungi with his bare hands, and then putting a wooden plank over the damaged spot. “And guess what— the ceiling continued to leak lol. When I say New York is different, it’s different,” the tenant laughed.

“Mushrooms growing in the house are usually a sign of excess moisture and poor ventilation, which creates an ideal environment for fungi to thrive,” according to Gorilla Grow Tent. And where the walls or ceiling have shrooms, there’s a good chance of serious mold hiding about. Mold spores are anything but good for your health, and as one Reddit user pointed out, they “could lead to serious and potentially fatal health issues.” That said, a landlord’s lack of responsibility in allowing such a health hazard could even be grounds for breaking a lease.

Fortunately, the renter of the New York apartment with bathroom shrooms claims he moved out of the place a while back. Hopefully, his lungs or skin weren’t damaged from living in such a fungi-infested home.
