Among the many successful speakers at this year’s Fortune Most Powerful Women event, many feel that Meghan Markle‘s achievements don’t warrant much celebration. From her poorly rated Netflix series to her relaunched brand, As Ever, not many have ever had high hopes for the ambitions of Prince Harry’s wife, besides her friends and hardcore fans. Yet, she still managed to be a speaker for Fortune’s famous event, but made a harrowing mistake about her own brand despite being the founder and self-proclaimed CEO.
Speaking about her company As Ever, founder Meghan Markle said during her Fortune Most Powerful Women panel that her brand’s first drop was during February or March. However, followers of the Sussexes on Reddit were quick to point out that her brand’s collection first launched on April 2nd. This rather notable mistake by the founder of the business has made many doubt whether she’s involved with As Ever besides being its brand ambassador. “What a way to say you were not involved in it beyond taking some pictures,” remarks a commenter.
“When a redditor knows more about your brand than the CEO. :),” jokes one individual, referring to how Reddit users remember when the brand drop happened, but Meghan Markle didn’t. Another pointed out how As Ever is actually just a renamed brand of American Riviera Orchard, which was founded last year. Yet, Meghan mentioned during the Fortune panel that her brand launched this year. “What a CEO of the yearππ»ππ»ππ»,” laughs a Redditor. Many will recall that the renaming came about due to trademark setbacks, including the fact that the initial name was restricted to a specific area, whereas Meghan wished to be more global.

A few suspect that she purposefully made the mistake about her brand to appear more “natural” or “authentic” to the public. She was an actress, after all, and remembering lines isn’t something she’d forget so easily after marrying Prince Harry. Critics suspect that she’s attempting to ‘appear busy’ and preoccupied with so much work as a founder. But the fact of the matter is that “she doesnβt want to acknowledge that she has been a business mogul lol for only 6 months – a semester basically,” says a commenter. Intentionally or not, it still doesn’t look good for her, considering how Meghan is quite the magnet for controversy.
Several others point out that, as embarrassing as Meghan’s first brand drop hiccup is, it’s still not as awkward as her friend, Chrissy Teigen, forgetting her own children’s birthdays during With Love, Meghan Episode 2. Again, scripted or not, it’s not the type of content that boosts favorable PR beyond public criticism.
