These days, people aren’t even trying to hide their racism anymore. Instead of just muttering hateful things under their breath, some go as far as to throw curses and slurs at anyone they see as “different.” In some extreme cases, they even call the police on innocent people just because of their own racist assumptions. For one Black man from Georgia, this kind of ugly prejudice turned into a deeply unpleasant and humiliating experience. He found himself dealing with police officers after a woman called 911, falsely claiming that he had kidnapped two children. The whole thing started at a Walmart, where the man had crossed paths with a woman who seemed suspicious of him simply because he was spending time with two white kids. He sensed right away that something felt off about her attitude, and his suspicions were confirmed when a police officer later approached him.
As soon as he saw the officer coming, the Black man began recording the encounter. He calmly tried to explain what was going on, but the Georgia officer still insisted on seeing the children to make sure they were safe. The two kids, one girl and one boy, stepped out of the car. They looked perfectly fine, showing no signs of fear or distress as they faced the officer. The older child, a girl, clearly explained that the man was their babysitter and that they had gone to Petco before grabbing dinner at Subway.
During the tense exchange, the man did not hold back from calling out the obvious racism behind the situation. He pointed out that the woman who had called 911 had made her assumptions purely because she could not accept seeing a Black man with two white kids. As the conversation went on, another person arrived at the scene, a Black woman who quickly came to his defense, confirming that the man actually ran a babysitting business.
Even with all this information, the Georgia officer continued to ask the kids over and over if they were okay. The kids responded with blank, uncomfortable stares, likely confused and embarrassed by the whole situation. Thankfully, the officer eventually realized there was no kidnapping and let everyone go, though the damage to the man’s dignity had already been done.
When the video of the encounter hit social media, viewers were outraged. Many described the whole thing as blatant racism and clear racial profiling. “How many times does the cop need to ask the kids if they’re okay? Unbelievable. They were nervous and scared of the cop and that nosy lady, not their babysitter. I hope their mom files a lawsuit. This is discrimination of the highest order,” one user commented.
Another Redditor shared their own story as a male babysitter, saying they too had faced unfair suspicion just because of their gender and appearance. “I’ve had similar situations happen to me. While taking care of kids, I’ve had people, mostly women, approach the children I was with to ask who I was. It’s not only disrespectful but also sexist and even ageist. It makes me so angry because I genuinely care about the children I look after and would do anything to keep them safe. I’ve even had families refuse my services because I’m a man. People give dirty looks when I hug kids of a different gender or race. It’s disgusting and just shows how insecure some people are. All I want is to give the kids a happy, safe experience.”
