New York Cop Who Claimed ‘Dark-Skinned Man’ Shot Him Gets Jail After Court Finds He Shot Himself, ‘His Lies Wasted Hundreds of Hours’

The cop who cried wolf

Lies can get costly, and some of them are so costly that taxpayers are the ones to foot the bill. Such is the case for a former New York State cop named Thomas Mascia, who shot himself and blamed it on a “dark-skinned” assailant. Naturally, his colleagues and the state of New York scrambled to hunt down this potential cop-shooter, only to find out after hundreds of hours and thousands of tax dollars that the shooter was Mascia himself all along.

27-year-old Thomas Mascia of West Hempstead was the cop in question, and on October 22, he was finally sentenced to six months in jail during his trial in Nassau County Court. Mascia pleaded guilty to falsely reporting an incident, tampering with evidence, and official misconduct following a huge state-wide manhunt and investigation, which resulted in the court finding out that he fabricated the story.

“Thomas Mascia’s actions were as meticulously calculated as they were disgraceful. His lies wasted hundreds of hours of law enforcement manpower, deeply cost taxpayers in Nassau County, and betrayed the public’s trust of those in uniform,” according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly, transcript courtesy of West Hempstead Daily Voice.

Mascia’s “story” began in late 2024, when he told fellow officers he had been shot in the leg by an unknown “dark-skinned man” while checking on a disabled vehicle on the Southern State Parkway. His claim prompted a massive police response and manhunt for the alleged shooter.

However, no evidence supported Mascia’s story. There were no bullets, witnesses, or matching vehicles ever found. Only a .22 caliber rifle, later recovered from his family’s home, was determined to be the weapon used in the staged shooting. Prosecutors then discovered Mascia had shot himself and staged the scene, even scattering shell casings to make it look convincing. Patrol car data showed Mascia had driven home and to Hempstead Lake State Park before returning to the parkway.

Jail time wasn’t enough

Apart from his jail time and probation, and as part of his plea deal, Mascia must also undergo mental health treatment and pay nearly $290,000 in restitution, especially after that rather expensive manhunt for a suspect that doesn’t exist. Prior to the latest incident of a bogus shooter, Mascia was also a victim of a hit-and-run two years ago, but surprisingly, the vehicle was never found, leading many people online to believe that the “dark-skinned” shooter wasn’t Mascia’s first charade.

“Imagine letting all your colleagues & family & friends clap for you outside a hospital for your heroism meanwhile you staged the incident to get a corrupt payout? Like could you smile & wave like he did in those news 12 videos? I couldn’t. It really makes you wonder how such morally corrupt people pass the cop exam with flying colors lol,” according to social media users who were discussing his case during the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, “dirty cop” sentiments for Mascia grew even further after the court and investigators also discovered that his father, Thomas Sr.– also a former cop who was convicted in a cocaine ring– owned an illegal assault-style firearm and $80,000 in cash inside their West Hempstead home. Thomas Sr. thus received his own charges separately.
