A Los Angeles–based man who drives for Uber shared a story about an unusual encounter he had during a grocery delivery, saying a customer tried to take advantage of his kindness after he helped load two full baskets of groceries into his car. In his TikTok video, he sat inside his vehicle recounting the situation and asked viewers if he was wrong for refusing to carry the groceries upstairs to her apartment.

Here’s the Full Story

The man first explained that when he’s not on long-haul trucking jobs, he works different Uber gigs to stay productive. “I do Uber rides, Uber shop, Uber Eats, anything Uber got to offer,” he said. That day, he was picking up a woman from a Smart & Final store in Compton. “The lady has so many groceries… Two baskets of groceries. I mean, ridiculous,” he recalled. Wanting to be helpful, he folded down the back seats to make extra room and helped her load the heavy bags into his vehicle, even though he wasn’t required to.

The woman was only traveling a short distance to an apartment complex nearby. However, when they arrived at her destination, things went south quickly. “There was a language barrier,” he explained. “She [kept] pointing upstairs and [showing] me the number with her hand.” He said he understood that she wanted him to take the groceries up but politely declined, explaining that carrying items to the second floor wasn’t part of his job. “I don’t get paid to do that,” he said firmly.

A few minutes later, a minivan suddenly pulled up beside them. The Uber driver described it as an “old-school soccer mom van with the sliding door,” and a man and three teenage-looking boys stepped out. They turned out to be the woman’s husband and sons. Seeing the family arrive, the driver wondered why she had called an Uber at all when her husband and kids could have picked her up instead.

“Y’all got a whole soccer mom van and y’all had your mama/wife Uber to Smart and Final, load up a gang of groceries… Uber back home. And she was expected to get all this stuff up to the second floor,” he thought at the time. “And even more crazier than that, she expected [me] to take them up to the second floor.” That revelation, he said, made him even more certain he had done the right thing. He also added that the woman continued giving him angry looks as her family began unloading the items. “She was still looking at me with the evil eye,” he said, joking that she “was trying to put a little thing” on him as he was leaving.

Here’s What Netizens Had to Say About the Los Angeles Grocery Trip Story

In the comments section of the video, most people agreed with the driver’s decision not to help the woman carry her groceries upstairs. “No, you were not wrong. Uber and Lyft drivers are not paid to carry any of your packages,” one commenter wrote. A second said, “No, people have no problem using people… her kids can help put the groceries into the home.” “No, sir. You went over and beyond already! You were not wrong!!” a third remarked, while another added, “Some people just feel like they are royalty.”

Many were also stunned that the woman’s family expected him to do more. “They know how to play the game,” one user commented. “All I can do is shake my damn head,” someone else said. Another netizen wrote, “I’m glad you didn’t let her play you.”
