Katy Perry is back in the spotlight again, but for the wrong reasons. The singer and songwriter recently celebrated her 41st birthday, and her celebration clip went viral because it showed her spontaneously throwing her birthday cake to the ground for some reason and then letting her dancers eat the cake on the floor. The viral clip has since made Perry the subject of much criticism and mockery online.
The 41st birthday was reportedly filmed after a stop on Perry’s Lifetimes Tour and shared via Carousel on her Instagram. It shows the singer still in costume as she blows out candles on a large sheet cake surrounded by her team. Instead of cutting and sharing it, Perry suddenly hurled the cake toward a hapless man wearing a headset. The man ducked, and Perry missed, and the cake exploded on the ground:
It might have been a perfectly good cake, which was why you can see Perry’s dancers (but not her) tasting and eating it afterward, or perhaps they were just really hungry after the tour. But while Perry found her cake blunder funny, it appears many people online were weirded out by her behavior, calling it unnecessary or even “cringey”.
On X/Twitter, the alleged daughter of the birthday cake’s baker even called out Katy Perry. Apparently, her mom was so excited and happy about making a cake for Katy Perry, only for the singer to waste her efforts and laugh at it. “My mom was the one that baked this cake, she was so excited about the opportunity to make a cake for Katy Perry and spent so long on it, im genuinely confused and upset as to why she would do this,” criticizes the baker’s daughter.

While it’s unclear whether the daughter’s post was sarcastic, the reaction online was swift and heated. “The most disrespectful thing is her being okay with her crew having to demean themselves to eat food off the floor,” one commenter said. Another wrote, “This hurt my feelings and I didn’t even bake the cake.”
Of course, some defended Perry, as it was her cake now, and she did pay for it, meaning she could do whatever she wanted with it. In any case, it appears Perry is no stranger to online criticism after having a resurgence in popularity as one of the few people invited to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Space Flight. Perry was notably meme’d to the high heavens after posting her celebratory video following the touchdown back to Earth.
Recently, Perry was also spotted at a yacht with Canada’s former Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, before the two ultimately went public for her birthday party in Paris. Perry was apparently flattered by Trudeau joining her Lifetimes Tour. Still, people were notably raising eyebrows at the relationship, “This would have been more interesting in terms of us-canada relations if he were still the PM . Trump crash out would have been epic,” claims a fan.
