November is the second month of the United States federal government shutdown, which started on October 1, and Americans all over the country have been wondering how they’re going to feed their families. Fortunately, there are various states that have sided with their citizens, such as Virginia, to ensure that some funding will still go out to hungry children and families. Now, the Connecticut attorney general has revealed that they’ve won a case against Donald Trump to provide their citizens with the same.

This decision leaves no room for doubt— USDA can and must release the contingency funds and stop weaponizing hunger for political advantage. Donald Trump has a stark legal and moral choice before him— he can keep fighting this losing battle, he can insist on starving American families for political leverage, or he can release the funds now.

The above video was posted to the TikTok account of the Connecticut attorney general William Tong, where he explains that they now have a federal court order that says that “Donald Trump can’t willfully and intentionally withhold food from children and families across Connecticut and across this country. And he can’t defund SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.” He goes on to explain that the case should never have happened in the first place, seeing as the shutdown was done by Trump’s administration.

He goes on to say that the administration is reportedly withholding food from people in order to achieve a political result. According to the official White House website, Democrats are the reason for the shutdown, alleging that their staunch opposition to Donald Trump has forced the administration to close its doors.

William Tong acknowledges these statements as an attack on the American people and expresses that in this video by saying, “It’s not okay to use healthcare and food as leverage in a political battle or stalemate. It is never okay when you’re trying to get your political opponents to heel, to starve them into submission.“

Many of the commentators who left replies on the video agree with Tong, with the top comments including, “Food should never be weaponized. Everyone deserves to eat,” and “IMPEACH TRUMP IMMEDIATELY!!!!!” It is unclear how or when these particular changes are set to be implemented as part of Connecticut’s social services. Currently, the social services website for the state does not reflect this win, though it is likely to change in the coming days.

Tong has been the 25th attorney general of Connecticut for six years, and has since pledged to be what he calls a “firewall” against the entire Trump administration. This action against the government’s closure is just one of many battles he has been a part of in recent years to provide healthcare and social services to the American people.
