Unfortunately, there has been a long-running line of racists spewing racism within the United States. That line seems to have only gotten longer in recent years. What’s really sad is seeing this bleed into the lives of your students. A Texas student was shocked to discover that his sister was reprimanded for speaking in Spanish during class. Fortunately, his sister had recorded the entire situation, exposing exactly what happened. However, no student should ever have to deal with this.
The above video was posted to the TikTok account @theogazez, a family account showcasing the everyday lives of the Ogazez family in Texas. While most of their content typically revolves around reality television-inspired vlogs, this one was different. Instead of the typical, structured look of their videos, this one appears to have been secretly taken from the cellphone of the Ogazez family’s daughter.
You can very clearly hear her being reprimanded for speaking to another person in Spanish while in class. While students shouldn’t be talking to others while class is in session, the meaning behind this private meeting between the teacher and the students who were talking to one another held a very different tone. The teacher is very specifically upset about the fact that they were speaking Spanish, not that they were talking.
Racist Teacher Scolds Students for Speaking Spanish
In fact, the caption written on the video itself says, “Pov: your sister gets in trouble for speaking Spanish.” Throughout the video, the teacher weakly explains her perspective on them speaking Spanish. Apparently, she simply doesn’t like it, but lightly alludes to the fact that she doesn’t like not knowing if the students are speaking about her directly. When pressed, the teacher got upset and said, “I am the adult, and you are to do exactly what I tell you—If I tell you not to speak Spanish, there’s a reason. I don’t have to give you a reason, you’re supposed to do it.”
The comments were immediately flooded with replies from across the country, championing for the girls to get justice. Some of the top comments include, “Isn’t that a violation of a human right,” and “THATS STRAIGHT UP RACISM WHAT 😭“
By the tail end of the video, things get even wilder. The teacher simply says, “Now, moving forward, there will be absolutely no Spanish in my class.” Since a school bell immediately goes off in the background, the teacher likely said this so that the students would agree and be off to their next class. Regardless, it is a terribly racist experience to subject your student to.
