Retail workers often have to deal with some of the rudest and most demoralizing people ever, sometimes on a daily basis. And while we have no shortage of fast-food altercations, one of the most notable ones recently occurred in a Kansas branch of Burger King, where a lawyer got into a dispute with the cashier and the manager over misgendering.
Kathryn or Kathy Brown is the lawyer in question, and early in November, she walked into a Burger King in Kansas, hoping to get her fast-food fix. Brown, however, appears to have a problem with women who supposedly look masculine; hence, she deliberately called the cashier, Lily, a “young man.” Lily got annoyed after Brown kept misgendering her, so she clapped back by calling Brown a “sir” after taking her order. This angered Brown, and she immediately called for the manager:
The video, captured and uploaded by Brown herself, has since gone viral and has been reuploaded several times on other social media platforms. Once Brown got hold of the manager and owner, Kimberly Buyer, she was immediately told she couldn’t record, but Brown insisted she’s a First Amendment Lawyer and can. In Brown’s “defense,” she told the cashier, Lily, that “I call you what I see,” even though Lily had repeatedly corrected her.
Brown further insisted that Lily “is not a young lady, and you’re free to think that she is,” despite the branch owner claiming otherwise. Regardless, the owner appears to have sympathized with her cashier and deemed Brown’s tirade and complaint as an insult to her employees. The owner then asked Brown to leave her Burger King branch. Eventually, Brown left the Burger King after the misgendering exchange.
People online are condemning Brown’s petty outburst
The internet, meanwhile, was quick to judge Brown as an “insufferable” Karen, and that apparently, despite being a lawyer, “Cathy Brown is a first amendment lawyer, who doesn’t understand that the first amendment applies to everybody not just lawyers and that corporate doesn’t get to deny their employees their first amendment rights either,” according to a commenter.
Other people were thankfully sympathizing with the Burger King employees, especially Lily, who, regardless of her gender, deserves to be called what she prefers. “This employee makimg minimum wage didnt deserve this,” says a TikTok user. Sadly, it appears Kathy Brown didn’t apologize to Lily for her rudeness, and people online believe that “Lilly deserves an apology.”
Some have pointed out just how ridiculous or miserable Brown’s video was, “Wait so she misgendered someone and threw a fit when she got misgendered???? ðŸ˜ðŸ¤£”. While many have indeed confirmed Brown’s identity as a legitimate lawyer, there were still those who questioned her, “She’s a high powered lawyer with a Burger King coupon.”
