Major store chains need to be called out more often for their waste. Especially at restaurants and grocery stores, the amount of food waste is astounding. It makes you think about all the people who could benefit from having fresh food instead of throwing it in the garbage, so it can instead feed the local landfill. A charismatic New York kid recently jumped in a dumpster to hand out shoes to city-goers.

Hayley Folk (@hayleyfolk) shared a TikTok video showing what she calls the “most NYC experience.” She explains it was “running across this kid rummaging through the dumpster to give away brand new shoes that a store just threw out.” New York City, specifically, has a massive waste problem, and many people don’t think about it until they experience it themselves. From overflowing bins to people illegally dumping their garbage, the contamination is a real issue within the city that many people call home.

The awesome kid in Hayley’s video fought back against a shoe store that threw away new shoes. In the video, he calls out, “There’s another one!” while smiling. He rummages through shoe boxes, holding up the brand new shoes he finds for all to see. At one point, he says, “Okay, I got a 6.5!” It’s clear that he’s taking shoe size requests from the crowd gathered all around him. To add to the hilarity, he even starts dancing at one point so that his audience gives him tips. It truly encompasses the sense of community that people strive for in New York City – even the city’s own children.

One commenter hilariously pointed out, “He’s going to own a store and be a millionaire one day.” With that big personality, I’d wholeheartedly have to agree with her. Other commenters asked why the shoes were inside the dumpster in the first place. Hayley commented and gave us all the answer we were waiting to hear: The shoe store went out of business. Instead of giving the shoes away, they simply decided to throw them out with the garbage. It’s pretty disheartening since there are tons of people out there who can’t afford to buy shoes. This is one of those situations where people can definitely do better for society.
