AdHoc Studio has plenty to be thankful for this week. The team of former Ubisoft, Telltale Games, and Night School Studio developers announced that Dispatch, its episodic superhero adventure, has surpassed 2 million units sold, a milestone that arrived just days after the series wrapped its eight-episode first season.
The indie studio shared the news across its social media channels on Wednesday, pairing the announcement with celebratory artwork by artist Derek Stratton. “We’re also sad there are no new episodes this week, but thank you to the 2 million players that have joined us so far. Wouldn’t be here without you,” the studio posted, noting the remarkable growth the game has seen throughout November.
The achievement is impressive given how quickly Dispatch has expanded its audience. Just over two weeks ago, AdHoc reported that the game had crossed the one-million-unit mark, meaning its player base had effectively doubled in half a month. For a niche, narrative-driven project in a market dominated by sprawling open-worlds and roguelite survival hits, the surge signals a strong appetite for character-focused, story-first experiences.
You can also probably thank the memes and numerous social media clips for Dispatch, most of which highlighted its memorable and quirky cast of characters. It’s practically the internet equivalent of word-of-mouth marketing.
What’s next for AdHoc Studio?
Dispatch was originally conceived as a one-season adventure, but the unexpected success has the team now openly considering a Season 2. Fans have been vocal about wanting more following the finale, which drew praise for its sharp writing and memorable cast, qualities many have compared to the golden era of Telltale storytelling. AdHoc’s pedigree certainly helped explain the reception, as some of them worked on actual Telltale games before moving on to an indie venture.
Apart from having Telltale veterans, AdHoc is also well-known for being comprised of former Ubisoft developers, some of whom worked on iconic titles such as the Splinter Cell series. Three of the four founders of AdHoc were notably working at Ubisoft before they founded the company.
It’s also worth noting that AdHoc Studio isn’t the only ex-Ubisoft dev studio that has seen much success in its independent ventures. Sandfall Interactive, the studio that made the current strongest Game of the Year contender, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, was also founded by a former Ubisoft employee. Coincidentally, Ubisoft is now rumored to be undertaking an acquisition deal after its stock value flatlined earlier in the month and after delaying its half-year earnings report.
