Minnesotans Rally Behind Plan to Rename State Office Building After Melissa Hortman: ‘Her Family Deserves it’

Make it happen.

In the weeks since the tragic killing of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, a grassroots push to rename the newly renovated State Office Building in her honor has gathered remarkable momentum. And nowhere is that more visible than over on Reddit, where Minnesotans have voiced near-unanimous support for the idea.

The effort, shared widely through a petition circulating online, calls for the building to be named after Hortman as a tribute to her two decades of public service, her leadership in the House, and the values she championed: justice, education, clean energy, health care access, and cross-partisan cooperation. For many Minnesotans, the proposal is a necessary response to the political violence that claimed her life.

There is a movement to rename the new state office building in memory of Melissa Hortman!

On r/minnesota, the thread announcing the naming effort earned more than 1,400 upvotes in less than a day, with commenters expressing strong, often emotional approval.

“She got murdered for being a legislator. Seems like the appropriate thing.”

Others kept it simple: “Hope it happens!” and “Feels like a no brainer to me,” wrote several users. Even amid the subreddit’s trademark dry humor and local in-jokes (including a brief tangent about hotdish authenticity and some light ribbing of the building’s current plain-as-possible name: State Office Building), the tone remained overwhelmingly supportive.

One user offered the name “Hortman Hall,” which quickly gathered endorsements of its own.

A tribute rooted in service and loss

The petition behind the movement emphasizes the breadth of Hortman’s legacy, both legislatively and personally. It highlights her ability to shepherd historic bills through a divided political climate, her advocacy for Minnesotans from all walks of life, and the generous spirit she and her husband, Mark (who was also killed in the attack), extended to their community.

It also frames the dedication as an act of defiance: a visible rejection of political violence, and a reminder of the fragility of democratic institutions. Hortman was the 61st U.S. elected official to be murdered, and is believed to be the first woman killed while serving in office.

For many Minnesotans, that matters deeply, and they want the state’s public buildings to reflect that.

Hortman’s death, alongside the attack on State Senator John Hoffman, has shaken the state. The manhunt for the suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, continues as state and federal authorities search for the former workforce development board member believed to have impersonated a police officer to gain access to the victims’ homes.

In the aftermath, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Governor Tim Walz called Hortman “a giant in Minnesota.” Former Vice President Al Gore praised her lasting impact. Senator Amy Klobuchar highlighted her work on women’s rights, clean energy, and police reform. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemned the political climate that enabled the attack.

That broader grief is mirrored in the Reddit thread. Even users critical of the expected political debates surrounding the naming effort agree that Hortman’s contributions warrant a permanent honor.

One commenter summed it up succinctly: “Her family deserves it.”

If the effort succeeds, the building that houses much of Minnesota’s legislative work would carry a name tied not just to tragedy, but to decades of pragmatic, compassionate leadership. It would serve as a reminder of the values Hortman upheld, and of the dangers facing public servants in a charged political moment.

For now, the momentum is real, and the community’s voice is clear. Minnesotans want the State Office Building to become Hortman Hall, and they want it to stand as a symbol of unity, courage, and the belief that “we all do better when we all do better.”
