A woman living in Loveland, Colorado, is claiming online that a delivery driver working at Blackjack Pizza was “racist and demanding” towards her son when he came to drop off their order. The mom said she had ordered the pizza while she was out, so her son had to answer the door and collect the food on her behalf.
Here’s What Her Home Camera Caught
According to the surveillance video she later uploaded to TikTok, the driver walked up to the door and greeted the boy with a casual “How’s it going?,” before pulling the boxed pizza from his insulated bag. The boy responded politely, accepted the pizza, and thanked him.
But almost immediately after handing over the food, the driver held out a slip of paper and asked the boy if he wanted to sign it. Possibly because he did not realize the slip was meant for adding a tip and not something he was required to sign to complete the order, the boy replies, “Uh, no, it’s fine.” That’s when the driver pressed further, telling him, “You don’t want to give me a tip? That’s what it’s for,” before mentioning that it had taken him five miles to get to their home. The boy looked caught off guard at first but ended up agreeing to tip.
The Driver Suddenly Switches to Spanish
As the boy waited to be given a slip and pen, the driver suddenly said something to him in Spanish. When the boy didn’t respond and looked a bit thrown off, the man asked him if he spoke Spanish. The boy answered honestly that he didn’t and the man asked, “You didn’t learn from your mom and dad?” He then handed the boy the slip and as they filled it out, the driver continued talking, saying he had taught himself how to speak Spanish.
Although it seemed like he was just making conversation, the mother claimed that the man had made assumptions about her son’s ethnicity. She also said her son had never filled out a slip before and felt pressured into tipping.
Netizens Respond to the Pizza Delivery Exchange in Loveland
People in the comments had a wide range of reactions, touching on everything from tipping culture to whether the man had actually been racist to the boy. Some backed the mom, saying the driver clearly crossed a line. “Tips are optional. I hate when people think they are intitled [sic] for a tip,” one netizen wrote. A second asked, “Why would he assume his mom and dad speak Spanish?” A third commented, “Don’t ever let anyone talk to you like this.” A fourth said, “That’s weird to even ask for a tip. It would make me feel very uncomfortable and awkward.”
Those who saw the situation differently said the driver was pushy but not necessarily discriminatory. One comment read, “Sorry but I’m on the pizza guy’s side… Don’t order if you can’t afford to tip.” Another remarked, “Demanding yes, but not racist.” Someone else added, “Asking for a tip was overstepping fs but I wouldn’t call him racist at all 😂 Dude just wanted to show off his Spanish speaking skills.”
