It can be hard to have the “holiday spirit” when your Thanksgiving food explodes in your hands, causing glass shards to fly in every which way. And for one unlucky man in Connecticut, that’s exactly what happened. The food itself didn’t explode per se, but the Pyrex baking dish he was using to bake brussels sprouts blew up, making an absolute mess on his countertop. Definitely not an ideal thing to happen when you’re trying to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.
“Took it out of the oven and went to set it down on the cooktop. Before I even made contact with the counter it exploded on my hands…” the man recalled in his r/mildlyinfuriating post. What many assume likely happened was that the air above the countertop or surrounding area was cold. Perhaps the winter weather was affecting the home’s interior, or a nearby window was causing chilly air to seep in. That said, one commenter explains that cheap Soda-Lime Pyrex glass tends to “violently explode” when it undergoes thermal shock: going quickly from hot to cold or cold to hot.
On top of that, the man admits that the glass dish was around 10 years old, so there could have been some wear that was the final straw, so to speak, resulting in the explosion. Reasons why the accident happened aside, the fact that glass shards flew everywhere is less infuriating and more dangerous and scary than anything. “Mildly terrifying,” as one person puts it. Fortunately, the man does not mention any sort of injuries, and also adds that none of the food for the Thanksgiving dinner was harmed.
Still, it’s a good warning to anyone who owns Soda-Lime Pyrex bakeware, as they might want to be extra careful when cooking, especially if the dish is old. But if there’s any silver lining in what happened to the unlucky Connecticut man: “At least the turkey was fine….”
