If there’s anything more stressful to deal with in adulthood, it’s taxes. With the current administration making life harder for everyone across the country, it’s become even harder to pay taxes, making the process ‘infuriating,’ even. And one man from Vermont experienced what he thought “seems mildly infuriating” when he received an IRS bill for $0.00. In other words, he was getting charged for nothing, or was he? Filing taxes and then paying for them is a pain, but getting charged by the government for nothing is outrageous. But Reddit seemed to have an idea why this particular taxpayer is getting a zero-dollar bill.
The Vermont man posted his issue on r/mildlyinfuriating, but many were quick to point out that this invoice might indeed be legitimate. The top comment suggests that the individual paid his initial total completely, albeit past the deadline. Due to turning in the late payment, he’s been charged with a late fee, even though he technically owes the IRS nothing in terms of his taxes. “Previous late payment, which paid off initial balance, but carried over the late fee + interest,” as one person briefly puts it.
While a few disagree, thousands of users still agree that the post still checks out as “mildly infuriating.” After all, he did claim that no one answered his calls when he attempted to use the IRS’s phone system. “I think it’s MILDLY INFURIATING he even has to deal with it because it’s a bill sent for fees that he can’t talk to anyone about,” remarks a commenter. Dealing with that on top of being nickel-and-dimed for a late fee is pretty annoying as well, even though it is a legal requirement.
In the end, the Vermont taxpayer said he paid $200 online, which should hopefully cover everything. His story is a good lesson that just because you don’t owe the IRS tax money doesn’t mean it won’t come after you with late fees and excessive interest.
