An unfortunate reality is that so many school-aged children are going without school lunches every year in America. When families fall outside of eligibility to receive aid, their children may not be able to eat at school. Poverty and economic hardship leave far too many children without food when they need it most. This can impact their entire learning experience. If free school lunches were offered across the country, it could end this issue once and for all. One woman is making strides to bring school lunch to children because she knows of its importance. For a Mississippi school, children were about to receive the biggest blessing.

Sarah (@sarahshooots) works for a nonprofit, donating money to schools to pay for overdue school lunch debt. One student in particular reached out to her and said there was an astounding debt at Ocean Springs High School in Mississippi. Because of it, the student said that a lot of her friends were going without lunch. This is something that should never impact children during school hours but, unfortunately, we hear about it so often.

Sarah reaches out to the school and a secretary refers her to a second line for child nutrition. She calls that number and tells the man on the line that she works “for a nonprofit that pays off overdue school lunch accounts.” She then speaks with the main secretary and asks what the balance is for everybody at this current time. The secretary tells her that the overdue balances amount to $3,545.55. She chuckles as she gives Sarah this absolutely massive number.

Sarah tells the lady on the phone that she’ll be writing out a check to put in the mail for that amount. In the most nonchalant manner, the secretary says, “Okay, thank you ma’am.” But I can guarantee it’s going to be overwhelming for those students to find out that they’re going to be able to eat meals at the school like normal. This should be a given for all children across America and Sarah’s nonprofit, the Proper Help Foundation, is doing the ultimate work for these kids.

One commenter pointed out, “Their reaction was so underwhelming.” Knowing that someone is taking care of thousands of dollars’ worth of school lunch balances would have knocked me off my feet. I guess this is just another day for them. Another commenter stated, “Food is a right not a privilege.” But in our ‘great’ country, children and families literally fight to have food. There are so many countries across the world where school lunches are completely free. Apparently, we still have to figure that one out.
